Widows of Culloden

Alexander McQueen's Widows of Culloden
Dress, Windows of Culloden
Autumn/Winter 2006-7
ivory silk organza and tulle

This dress is what Kate Moss wore in her hologram. The hologram imagery is the closest to what a fairy is like in my mind, the image of fairies from the limited supply of Western fairy tale books I read when I was little, ephemeral, flowing and enigmatic. The hologram and the music is breathtaking. I love the Star Wars thing at the end of the show.

“I’m an avid follower of the news, and sometimes you just can’t take any more war, any more disasters, and you want to remind yourself there’s beauty in the world. [With this collection] I wanted to show a more poetic side to my work. It was all about […] a feeling of sadness, but in a cinematic kind of way. I find beauty in melancholy.”
Alexander McQueen

I agree with him, but I am not an avid follower of the news, and I don’t need to remind myself that there is beauty in the world. I see beauty everyday. But I do agree with the “beauty in melancholy” part.
