Water Tag

For select fabrics in our Brentano Green line I designed a parchment paper tag to attach under our regular sample tag. It reads:
The practices used to produce this fabric are water conscious. By making this selection, you are helping Brentano conserve water.
The person who benefits the most from this tag is me. Whenever I catch myself wasting water, I feel ashamed and immediately correct myself. I ask myself, how could I champion a cause but act contrary to it? The water tag has turned into an alerting mechanism in my daily life; I am more alert when using water and am more conscientious. « Read the rest of this entry »
Lactose Intolerant

A few years ago, I was surprise to hear my gastroenterologist tell me that 100% of Asians are lactose intolerant. So I have been drinking soy milk all this time. Today Brentano’s intern introduced me to Lactaid, a milk that is lactose free. She said she has been drinking it for two years. Really? I got curious and immediately started reading the carton.
I don’t know when I started this habit of reading labels. I grew up in an era when we bought food by weight or by pieces from local markets. If you bought pork, the butcher would weigh the meat and tie a string of raffia on it so you could carry the meat without touching it. The packaging material included large leaves, like lotus leaves. Old newspaper was a luxury since it cost money to buy newspaper—although come to think of it now, that would have been the most toxic packing material you could have in those days. We would go to the deli next door to buy our daily supplies with our own bowls, go to the produce market to buy vegetables and put them in our baskets without any packaging. No plastic bags, no labels, nor would we know where the food was produced. My mother told me about how she bought sesame oil in her youth: They would bring their own bottles to the oil shop with its big drums of oil, and the shopkeeper would weight the sesame oil and shoot the oil through a funnel into her narrow necked bottle. « Read the rest of this entry »
Weaver’s Knot

When I interview a person for a textile design job, I want to see their portfolio and test their color sense with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test. I want to know how well they can draw, how fluent they are with computer drawing tools, and how sharp their color senses are. I suppose other professions test a variety of things depending on their trade. I just learned that one of the tests for weavers is how fast they can tie a weaver’s knot.
So what does a weaver’s knot do? « Read the rest of this entry »
Why Not Have Fun?

Our shipping clerk invited me to see his work station as soon as I came back from a long trip on Monday. I was busy getting caught up, and he invited me again the second day. Funny that his station is only 15 steps away from my office but I did not get a chance to take a look at it until this morning, Friday. He used our pattern Caress to cover his table top and carved out the Puma logo on the lower right side. He upholstered his drawer also. How fun. He likes fashion. « Read the rest of this entry »
Confidence

I sometimes compare notes with a friend of mine who is a successful business man. He told me about one of his employees one day. He said:
I was talking to a newly hired employee who has great skill in what he does. I told him that he can be groomed to advance himself in his work and that I would like to present him with more challenges as a part of the training process. « Read the rest of this entry »
